Oyoko School of Dispensing and Optical Training Appeals for Urgent Infrastructure Support

The Oyoko School of Dispensing and Optical Training, the premier institution for optical education in West Africa, is grappling with severe infrastructure deficits that threaten its mission to become a world-class eye-care training center. Located in Oyoko in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, the school has made a passionate appeal to the government and stakeholders for immediate intervention.

Established initially as a private institution, the school was absorbed into the public sector in 2008. Despite this transition, it has yet to benefit from significant infrastructural development. According to Principal Mr. Kofi Boakye, the school lacks essential facilities such as dedicated lecture halls and on-campus student hostels. This shortfall has forced students to seek accommodation in nearby communities, often under less-than-ideal conditions, which disrupts academic focus and campus life.

The absence of adequate lecture spaces has also led to overcrowding and scheduling conflicts, undermining the quality of education. These challenges are particularly pressing given the school’s ambition to scale up its intake and expand its programs to meet the growing demand for eye-care professionals across the region.

However, school authorities emphasize that more support is needed to fully realize their vision. They are calling on alumni, NGOs, corporate bodies, and philanthropic individuals to contribute to the development of the institution. With the right investment, the Oyoko School of Dispensing and Optical Training could become a beacon of excellence in optical health education not just in Ghana, but across the continent.
